Diabetes in Australia
I recently read that an estimated 275 Australians develop diabetes every day. The 2005
Australian AusDiab Follow-up Study (Australian Diabetes, Obesity and
Lifestyle Study) showed that 1.7 million Australians have diabetes but
that up to half of the cases of type 2 diabetes remain undiagnosed. By
2031 it is estimated that 3.3 million Australians will have type 2
diabetes (Vos et al., 2004). Visit www.diabetesaustralia.com.au for more information
This is very much cause for concern with this study predicting the amount of people in Australia with type 2 diabetes will nearly double by 2031. It is a health epidemic that needs to be addressed and we clearly need to look seriously at our eating and lifestyle habits and those of our children, as up to 60% of cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented through blood glucose control.
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes there are ways you can control and manage your health by following a balanced diet and having regular physical activity. If you don’t have diabetes, why not do everything now to ensure you and your family avoid this disease in the future. Here are a few tips on making healthy choices for managing or preventing diabetes:
- HAVE A HEATHY AND BALANCED DIET. This is vital for managing and preventing diabetes and cannot be stated enough. Healthy foods to choose include non-starchy vegetables, fruit, whole grain foods, dried beans, fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy, and water and calorie-free drinks rather than sugar laden soft drinks or alcohol. For a full list of options and more details visit the Diabetes Australia website.
- COOK YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY MEALS. If you are unsure of the types of dishes you can create following a diabetes friendly diet, then don’t forget that every single recipe in my Symply Too Good To Be True cookbooks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 have been Diabetes Australia Approved so you are in safe hands. In addition, there is a dietitian's tip with every single recipe to let you know which recipes can be enjoyed regularly, and which ones are more occasional treat food.
- BE ACTIVE. One of the reasons I lost 35kgs and I’m sure prevented conditions such as diabetes is that I became an active person. I gave up the couch and started to move my body, as well as making healthy food choices. Any expert will tell you that exercise is vital to being healthy and has many benefits for the body and mind. Check with your doctor before you start any new exercise, and make sure to start slow. You don’t need to be running a marathon to reap the rewards of regular exercise. Walking can be a great way to be active on a regular basis.
Let’s not give in to projected statistics but instead fight now to reduce this disease and give ourselves and our children the best chance for a healthy future.
